Verification Statement

When teaching the IEP it’s important for students to understand why they have an IEP and may be in the resource room for some time in during the school day. That is one of the most asked questions I get from students, “Why am I in special education and have to come to your room?” To help answer this question I have students create an “I” statement using a few apps to help them create their statement.

It’s important that they are able to restate their verification statement in their own words so they can understand their disability. Many times on the MDT the language used is above their reading level so they need to be able to use language that they understand. Using apps like Bitmoji, students can create themselves so their “I” statement becomes real to them and those who they present it to.

Steps to creating their verification statement:

1. Create account with Bitmoji.

2. Create avatar

3. Choose pictures (3-4 so they can have choices)

4. Save to camera roll

5. Using Photo Cutout Editor choose Cut & Paste

6. Using the scissors cut around the Bitmoji trying to leave out any words

7. Choose background for the Bitmoji –adjust size and save

8. Repeat steps 5-7

9. Using Bubble Speech – choose one picture that was just saved

10. Have students type in their verification statement from their IEP

11. Save to camera roll

12. Repeat step nine using a different picture

13. Students will explain the verification statement using their words

14. Combine both pictures into PicCollage
