Strengths and Concerns

Why should we be the ones to make a list for students strengths and concerns? We want students to own their IEP’s so why don’t we let them make their lists. Let students be creative with their lists using an app of their choice. I had students create their list of strengths and concerns using Word Art (there are many apps or websites that could be used). After they created their strengths they saved it to their camera roll then they created their list of concerns and saved it as well. Once they created and saved both list they put them into Pic Collage. Their lists include information from their IEP. Most of these will be from teachers and parents so make sure you have them include their own strengths and concerns. This can be hard for some students so they may need some encouragement from either you or maybe some classmates can help them out. Their friends/classmates know them better than teachers, so use them to help out if they are having trouble.

Steps:

1. Using their IEP have students list their strengths onto Word Art. If there are sentences have students pick out the key word.

2. Students need to come up with their own strengths to add to their list.

3. In Word Art students can pick the shape and color of text for their strengths.

4. Save to Camera Roll.

5. Same as #1-3 but use concerns this time.

6. Save to Camera Roll

7. Using PicCollage students can put the two pictures together.

If you're wanting other students to do this you can ask their parents/guardians to provide a list of strengths and concerns they see at home. We sent home a paper describing what we needed from them and on the back was a chart for parents/guardians to fill out. Students also emailed their teachers to find out what they think their strengths are and also to find out anything they need to work on.
